Increasingly, groom's cakes have become more prominent at wedding receptions. Typically, they have started to show up at many elegant receptions. In the past, the grooms cake was a regular tradition, however this changed over time.
The Groom's Cake -- A Brief History
Originally, the Groom's cake is thought to have originated from the Southern United States within the 19th century. The practice many think to have started within the mid-19th century. Originally, the bride's cake consisted of a dense fruitcake. This, however, was replaced at this time with pound cake that was stacked in the shape of a church steeple.
The groom's cake then appeared and took the place of the original bride's fruitcake. Customarily, the cake was sliced and put into a box for each of the guests to take home. According to an old folktale, if the single women from the wedding slipped the slice of fruitcake under their pillow, they would have a dream of their future mate.
Ultimately, tracing the history of the groom's cake can become quite dizzying. Many people hypothesize, but no one truly knows the real roots at which the groom's cake appeared.
The Reason for Adding a Groom's Cake
Later on, it's believed the fruitcake tradition was abandoned in favor of a cake that was more representative of the groom. Typically, the cake is either chocolate or has chocolate frosting on it. On the other hand, the cake is sometimes baked according to a certain shape as well or is adorned by a groom's cake topper representing a special interest or hobby of the groom. Mostly, the concept of the cake should represent the likes of the groom.
What does a Groom Cake Consist of?
Primarily, a wedding focuses mostly on the bride and not on the groom. In general, the groom's cake makes a great addition to any wedding. Increasingly, more brides are ordering the cakes with the favorite filling and icing of the groom. It is one of the best ways to show the groom that they are important too and can be done through a number of different ways. Ultimately, the point of the groom's cake is to honor the groom and nothing other.
When Should the Groom's Cake Be Served?
Often, the serving of the Groom's cake has a lot to do with the preference of the bride and groom. Commonly, people still have the groom's cake served separate from the bride's cake. Generally, a member of the wait staff is responsible for this. Usually, those who choose to serve the cake at the reception do it in order to give people another option besides the bride's cake. However, some prefer to serve the Groom's cake at the rehearsal dinner, especially since the groom's parents are the host for this occasion.
What Type of Theme Should You Use On the Groom's Cake?
As mentioned before, the sole purpose of the Groom's cake is to honor the groom. With this in mind, it should represent the personal interests and personality of the groom. Ultimately, having a groom's cake is one of the most romantic additions that any bride can add to their wedding. What better way to represent your love, than through a cake that shows the man you love how much you care about the things that he does.
